Entrepreneur’s Therapy with Jason Delorie: From Rejection to Resilience in Africa’s Startup Scene

Funding in Africa isn’t broken, it’s misunderstood.

Let’s be honest: building a startup in Mauritius or anywhere in Africa doesn’t follow a Silicon Valley script. And when it comes to fundraising, the reality hits hard, especially for early, stage founders.

In this month’s Entrepreneur’s Therapy session, we sat down with Jason Delorie, founder, father, and now investor, to unpack the emotional and strategic rollercoaster of entrepreneurship. From rejected pitch decks to tough calls and moments of doubt, Jason shared the kind of raw, honest reflections that every Mauritian founder can relate to.

“In Silicon Valley, ideas can attract funding. In Africa, you need traction and revenue first.”

It’s a tough truth, but one that’s empowering once you embrace it. Because here, progress isn’t measured by pitch polish, it’s measured by proof.

Why “Entrepreneur’s Therapy” Exists

Behind every clean pitch deck is a messy journey, pivot plans, sleepless nights, and quiet wins that never make the headlines.

That’s why Entrepreneur’s Therapy exists. It’s La Plage Factory’s space for founders to speak freely, share the emotional weight of building something from scratch, and learn from each other. Vulnerability isn’t weakness, it’s the foundation of real growth.

Reality Check: Funding Models Aren’t Copy and Paste

Jason’s journey, from founder in Mauritius to investment programme manager at VC4A, gives him a rare dual perspective. He’s seen both sides of the table.

  • Founders say: “There’s no funding.”

  • Investors say: “There aren’t enough investable businesses.”

  • The truth? There’s a mismatch in expectations and readiness.

In Africa, traction matters. Real users, repeat behaviour, early margins, these are the signals investors look for. Glossy ideas aren’t enough. What they want is proof, not promise.

“A crisp slice of unit economics beats a glossy TAM slide every time.”

What Jason Wishes He Knew Sooner

Some of the most practical advice came from Jason’s own experience:

✔️ Build investor relationships before you need the money.
✔️ Use your financial model as a weekly decision, making tool, not just a fundraising prop.
✔️ Anchor your story to milestones: pilot → paid → retained.
✔️ Define what “investment, ready” means for your model, not someone else’s.

“Your financial model isn’t just for investors, it’s your operational compass.”

That compass should guide every hiring decision, pricing test, and runway call. Use it weekly, not just when fundraising.

Emotions Matter Too

This wasn’t just a strategy session; it was real talk about the emotional side of entrepreneurship:

  • The patience it takes when ecosystems move slowly.

  • The mentorship that helps you through self, doubt.

  • The reality that luck, timing, and resilience still play a role.

We heard from angels, ecosystem leaders, and fellow founders who echoed the same message: funding isn’t just about money. It’s about mindset, readiness, and storytelling.

Final Thought: Rejection ≠ Failure

If there’s one message Jason left us with, it’s this:

“Rejection isn’t the end. It’s a mirror. Look into it, learn, and try again, better, sharper, more aligned.”

Because the long game in Africa isn’t about perfect pitches, it’s about consistent progress, deep resilience, and the courage to keep showing up.
